Digestive Problem Management and Prevention 1. Eat smaller meals more frequently -- The key benefits here are less strain on your digestive system, a greater diversity of nutrients, and a more even flow of nutrients and sugars into your bloodstream. 2. Clean it up -- Minor cases of food poisoning happen all the time and we tend to not give much thought to a slight bout of diarrhea or gas. If you've ever had a more serious case of food poisoning you know exactly how bad it can be! Always clean your produce well. Maintain care when preparing food not to recontaminate cooked food with utensils or surfaces used during the preparation stage. 3. Fiber, fiber, fiber! -- Insoluble figer, found in vegetables and wheat bran, absorbs water as it heads through your colon. Soluble fiber, like that in fruits, legumes, and grains, dissolves in water to form a gel that helps soften stool. The American Dietetic Association recommends you eat 20 to 35 grams of dietary fiber daily. Fiber supplements are readily availabe, but be sure to drink lots of water so the fiber functions properly. 4. Stay hydrated -- Drink at least 6 to 8 8-ounce glasses of water to keep everything flowing. Perhaps more if you're supplementing your diet with a fiber supplement. 5. Keep everything moving -- Aerobic exercise helps speed up the digestive process. 6. Eliminate sorbitol -- Your small intestine can't absorb this artificial sweetener, so it ends up fermenting in your colon, resulting in gas and diarrhea. The compound is found naturally in strawberries, cherries, plums, prunes, and peaches. 7. Watch the dairy -- Your gas and diarrhea may be caused by lactose intolerance. This problem is more common with African-Americans and people of Asian and Mediterranean descent. The problem is caused by the absence of the enzyme lactase that digests lactose, the sugar in milk. This doesn't mean you have to eliminate dairy from your diet, but the symptoms can be eliminated by taking lactase supplements or buying dairy products that have lactase added. 8. Break the wind -- If gas is your problem, especially with beans, then Beano is made for you. It comes in two forms so pick whats best for you. Either a pill you take at meal-time, or a liquid that you sprinkle on your food. 9. Start the day with a hot beverage -- No matter if its tea, coffee, or cocao, hot beverages stimulate the reflex that triggers a bowel movement. 10. Let it go -- Don't wait too long when your body tell you its time. When you delay the process, water is reabsorbed from the stool. This may make it more difficult when you get around to it, and repeated over-exertions may lead to painfull (uncomfortable at the least) hemorrhoids. Recomended reading: Healthy
