Preventing Prostate Problems and Management

The sole purpose of the prostate is to produce and store seminal fluid during sexual arousal. At climax, the seminal fluid is shunted to the urethra where it mixes with sperm. Because the prostate is packed with nerve-endings, this is the primary pleasurable sensation one feels at climax.

Unfortunately the prostate is highly susceptible to cancer, and other ailments, such as difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate (BPH or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), as we age. Prostate cancer is the second leading cancer related cause of death in men. 1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer and 1 in 20 will die from it. Therefore its highly important to take care of your prostate health and here are some simple steps to help you do just that:

1. Supplement with Saw Palmetto -- Prostate problems occur because as men age, their testosterone levels drop. but Saw Palmetto contains compounds that help testosterone stay in the body longer. It can be found in tablet, capsule, and liquid forms, however, the concentration of active ingredients can vary dramatically from product to product so consult your doctor for a suggested brand and dosage.

2. Don't Supplement with Zinc -- Studies have shown that taking more than the Daily Value of 15 mg of Zinc could increase your risk of developing an enlarged prostate.

3. Don't Wait to Go -- When your bladder becomes too full, urine can back up into your prostrate and irritate it.

4. Stick to the Exercise Plan -- Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Active men run a much lower risk of prostate enlargement than their sedentary counterparts. It's thought that exercise relaxes the overstimulated nerves in the prostate that are believed to contribute to enlargement.

5. Supplement with Selenium -- A 200 microgram supplement of Selenium may increase levels of a particular antioxidant known to help protect prostate cells.

6. Supplement with Vitamin E -- Preliminary evidence suggests a supplement of 400 IU of the antioxidant Vitamin E daily helps protect against prostate disease, reducing prostate cancer risks by one-third.

Because vitamin E acts like a blood thinner, consut your doctor before beginning supplementation in any amount if you are already taking aspirin or blood-thinning medication, such as warfarin (Coumadin), or if you're at high risk for stroke.

7. Grab a Pair of Tomatoes -- Cooked tomatoes are the best source of lycopene, an antioxidant that may lower your risk for prostate cancer by as much as 35%. Lycopene seems to stop prostate cancer cells from multiplying. Lycopene is also found in raw tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, as well as can be found in supplement form.

8. Don't Over-Do the Calcium -- Evidence suggests that men who consume 2000 mg of calcium daily (about 6 glasses of milk) are nearly twice as likely to develop prostate cancer as those who consume 1000 mg. Too much calcium can lower the body's level of a compound believed to inhibit prostate cancer cell growth.

9. Grab Your Raisins -- Studies show that men who eat 1 ounce (about 1/4 cup) of raisins or other dried fruit a day have half the risk of prostate cancer than those who eat less.

10. Trim the Fat -- Diets high in saturated fats, common in meats and dairy products, seem to irritate the prostate and increase cancer risk, doctors say. Switching to low-fat eating may help stop the growth of microscopic prostate cancers before they have the chance to cause major problems. Likewise, eating polyunsaturated fats, found in cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, halibut, and tuna, seem to protect the prostate.
